Rocking Chair Redo

9/11/2020

I finally finished the rocking chair! I actually helped with this project, and I’m super excited it’s actually done!

We found this rocking chair for $20 at Goodwill. It was a piece of work: dusty and we’re pretty sure a dog got a hold of the bottom pieces. (Not mentioned in the steps: Steven fixed these end pieces with BONDO so that you can’t even tell they were ever chewed up in the first place!)

I immediately had a vision of a white rocking chair for our empty corner in the main room. So, I convinced Steven to get it and help me bring my vision to life.

Well, Steven definitely helped with the sanding the first couple of days, but as you can tell from my Instagram stories, he has been working super hard to complete the shower remodel we are doing for another local military family (more on that to come)!

Since he has been super busy I decided to complete the project on my own - mostly because I had already teased at a blog post for this week about it. So, early Friday morning I woke up and got to work.

Materials used:

Bondo (not pictured)
Paint brush
Sponge brush
Clear coat
White paint

So, here it is! Step by step, here’s what we did.
Picture
1. Sand the rocking chair. We had to use sandpaper sheets in order to reach all the corners and round pieces on this chair.
2. Paint the pieces you want! I decided to keep the seat of the chair unpainted. So, I tapped around the spindles in order to keep the paint off of the seat. I used a regular paint brush for the white pieces.

3. I had to do quite a few coats to cover everything completely. I almost stopped after one coat to keep the antique look, but it just wasn’t as cute as I thought it would be, so I did a few more coats (two and a half hours worth of more layers).
4. I used a clear finish for the seat because I really liked the raw wood color it had. I used a cheap sponge brush for this part.

5. I let it dry, and that was it! Super simple, but definitely time consuming.
