DIY Antique Dresser

10/9/2020

I’m really excited to share my latest DIY project with y’all! I got this dresser from a neighbor for $50, grabbed some chalk paint for $20 and the rest I already had from redoing the rocking chair last month! Check out this before and after!

I’ll share what process I used, but here are my main tips:
  1. Use FINE grit sandpaper, otherwise it will leave lines on the wood.
  2. Don’t try to use your hair dryer to blow the sanded dust off.
  3. Give yourself grace when distressing, it shouldn’t look perfect and you really just need to focus on the areas (mostly the corners) that would show natural wear and tear.
  4. Clean the furniture before you start! (Pledge probably works best, and I wish I had some.)
Okay! On to the steps, for anyone interested.
1. Clean the Dresser! I just wiped it down, but really wish I had used some pledge to really clean it good.
2. Remove the drawers and hardware.

3. Tape anything you don’t want to paint. (I got this far before realizing I didn’t care enough to finish covering it because I wasn’t crazy about the gold anyway.)
4. Paint!

I had to do a couple coats to get everything covered, as you can tell from these pictures.

I also kept the doors and drawers out to paint.
5. Sand the corners and (optional) other spaces where you’d like to see some distressing.

6. Put all the hardware back on and slide the drawers/doors back in and TA-DA that was it!

Here’s all the materials I used, or wish I had used, to complete this project. Check back because I will probably be switching out the hardware. Let me know your thoughts or suggestions for those in the comments!
